American Watch Company Chronodrometer Dial, Painted by John Webb
In addition to his expertise in dial making, John Webb was also a master dial painter. One of the early projects assigned to Webb at the American Watch Company in Waltham was the dial design for the “Chronodrometer.”
The Chronodrometer was marketed by Appleton, Tracy & Co. in the late 1850s as a horse timer. Despite being an unsuccessful endeavor, the hand-painted Chronodrometer dials produced by Webb exhibit remarkable artistic mastery.
Approximately 400 Chronodrometers were manufactured at the factory before being discontinued.
