While the most stunning designs from the “Society Dial” line that Elgin introduced in 1889 were vibrantly colored, many were sold “plain,” without any colorful embellishments.
This “Masonic Blue Lodge” dial represents one of the “plain” designs offered by Elgin. The design was also offered in colors and was furnished with either sunk seconds or double sunk and hard or glass enamel.
Interestingly, while the design is “plain,” a subtle brownish hue was applied to the etched shading, enhancing the perceived depth of the symbols. This effect can be observed most easily in the “all seeing eye” at the 12:00 position.
The “Blue Lodge,” or symbolic lodge, is a local Freemason lodge that works the first three Masonic degrees – Entered Apprentice, Fellowcraft, and Master Mason. These foundational degrees are required for membership in other Masonic organizations.
