U.S. Watch Company – Grade 142, 16-Size, 15 Jewels, Adjusted, c.1895, Serial No. 13541
Our recent study of Waltham’s Model 1870 drew attention to Charles V. Woerd, the brilliant mind behind many of the innovative features introduced in the Model 1870 Crescent Street watch. In 1885, Woerd partnered with others to organize a new company in Waltham: the United States Watch Company. This company is often confused with the American Waltham Watch Company and the naming conflict eventually led to a legal battle over the Waltham name. This particular watch represents one of the finer products produced at the U.S. Watch Company factory before being purchased by the Philadelphia Watch Case Company in 1901.⠀
